Łódź Airport is celebrating its 100th anniversary. On this occasion, the airport invites the residents of Łódź to an Airport Picnic, which will take place this coming Saturday from 12:00 to 18:00.
Łódź Airport is the oldest airport in Poland that was built on Polish land and has been operating continuously in the same location for 100 years. It was officially opened on September 13, 1925. At that time, on 40 hectares, there was a newly built hangar, a residential house for pilots and airport management, and a grass airfield. It was established on the initiative of, and funded by, the Polish Air Defense League.
Today, almost exactly 100 years later, the airport will host a Jubilee Airport Picnic, with attractions prepared for the whole family. What awaits the visitors?
-
Main attraction: a static display of airplanes and helicopters. Historic collector’s planes such as the Wilga and Piper, aircraft from Bartolini Air School and the Łódź Aeroclub, as well as a helicopter from the Military Aviation Works will arrive. If conditions allow, a very loud surprise will also land.
-
On a specially designated area of the airport apron, visitors will be able to see vehicles and machines used every day to service the runway and aircraft.
-
Various services cooperating with the airport will set up stands, including the Border Guard, State Police, Customs and Tax Office (with a dog!), the Airport Meteorological Station, and Military Aviation Works No. 1, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.
-
Next to the terminal there will be a health zone. Representatives of the National Health Fund (NFZ) will collect applications for the issuance of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) – very useful when traveling abroad.
-
The volunteer group World Restart a Heart Day will hold a CPR demonstration. Staff from the Airport Emergency Medical Service, which operates the HEMS base at Łódź Airport, will train participants in first aid.
-
For the youngest visitors: inflatable playgrounds, mini-golf, and a Zoo Borysew stand.
-
Food trucks and aviation-themed souvenir stalls will be set up near the terminal. The Water and Sewage Company, also celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, will provide a tanker with drinking water. Please bring your own bottles and flasks.
-
Throughout the picnic, the Memory Room at the Łódź Aeroclub will be open, run by the Łódź Aviation Seniors’ Club. It showcases archival photographs and artifacts from the early days of the airport.
-
At the Łódź Airport stand, visitors can take part in a contest with airline tickets to Sharm El Sheikh as the prize.
-
The highlight of the picnic will be the burying of a time capsule, to be opened 100 years from now by future generations. It will contain letters from airport employees and from Mr. Grzegorz and his family, who won the chance during a Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity auction to tour the airport and place their own letter and objects in the time capsule.
⚠️ Due to limited parking spaces for picnic visitors, we recommend arriving by public transport.
On the day of the Airport Picnic, special MPK shuttle buses marked with the letter “L” (for “lotnisko” – airport) will run between the airport and Łódź city center (near Stajnia Jednorożców). They will stop at the following locations:
-
Mickiewicza/Kościuszki
-
al. Włókniarzy/Mickiewicza
-
Bandurskiego/Dworzec Kaliski
-
Bandurskiego/Atlas Arena
-
Waltera Janke/Wyszyńskiego

The buses will run every 20 minutes from 12:00 to 18:00. In addition, the regular 65A and 65B lines will operate as usual.
Attention passengers! Flights on this day will operate as scheduled. However, please arrive at the airport a bit earlier. Passenger parking – unchanged.
